A Beginner's Guide to Growing Strawberries at Home

It has been about five or six or seven or eight years since we grew the first strawberries in our garden. Everything started when we tried to pick up some strawberries in nearby strawberry fields, and found nothing worth tasty, not a single variety. Well, that is understandable considering the weather in our region: extremely hot in summer and pretty warm in winter. No tasty strawberry variety can grow well in our region. The only place they can stay is northern China. Plus, most strawberry farms in Guangdong rely on the heavy use of pesticides to boost yield. As a result, their strawberries are neither natural nor healthy. Considering these two reasons, as well as our strong interest in exploring new species in our garden, we set the goal of planting healthy and tasty strawberry varieties in our garden. Now it has been a few years, and we are pretty successful.

The Strawberry Growth Cycle

In Shenzhen's warm climate, strawberries follow a growth cycle that is slightly different from that of northern regions. The main growing season begins when temperatures start to drop in October. This cooler weather allows newly planted seedlings (usually planted from September to October) to establish their root systems and develop healthy foliage.

Flowering and fruiting typically begin around December, depending on how early the plants were established. Through the winter months, strawberries continue to develop fruit steadily, since Shenzhen's mild temperatures fall within the optimal range for fruit formation. This fruiting period usually lasts until March or April of the following year.

Once temperatures begin to rise in spring, strawberries gradually stop producing fruit. At this stage, the plants shift their energy toward vegetative growth. Runners (stolons) begin to appear—often in several waves throughout the year, with notable growth both after fruiting ends and again in early autumn.

Preparation Before Planting

Before you really start to grow your strawberries, there are a few things you need to prepare.

Soil Preparation: To begin with, strawberries grow best in loose, fertile, well-aerated soil with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5–6.5. When preparing the growing medium, you generally have two options.

First, you can use the soil available around you. This usually requires pest control and fertilization with fully decomposed organic matter, such as sheep manure compost. Some growers also disinfect the soil by sun-drying it for an extended period and then adding microbial fertilizers to restore beneficial organisms.

Second, which is the method we used, is to purchase commercial coconut coir. After soaking and expanding it, the coir can be used directly as a clean, well-aerated substrate for raising strawberry seedlings.

Planting Time

Strawberry seedlings grow well in relatively low temperatures. Therefore, considering Southern China, especially Shenzhen's circumstance, the best time to plant the seedlings would be middle or late October, when the daily highest temperature falls under 30 degrees Celsius.

Buying Seedlings

There are many types of strawberry seedlings on the market, and for beginners, choosing one at random can feel like opening a blind box. So before selecting seedlings, it helps to define your criteria. For our family, the two main standards were simple: good flavor and suitability for growing in southern China. Of course, these are not the only possible criteria. If you grow strawberries on a balcony rather than a rooftop garden, you might add factors such as shade tolerance or ease of cultivation. These standards are entirely customizable.

Once you know your priorities, the next step is to look for varieties that match them. There are several ways to do this. One is to search online platforms such as Tieba or Xiaohongshu using your keywords to find posts with recommendations from experienced growers. We especially benefited from a Tieba forum called 草莓苗吧, which contains many helpful discussions and variety reviews. Another approach is to ask customer service from online nurseries; once you tell them your requirements, they can usually suggest suitable cultivars. Ideally, you combine both methods—cross-check recommendations and then choose a trustworthy store to place your order.

From our own experience over the past few years, the three varieties that performed best in our garden fall into three color categories: red (隋珠 Suizhu), pink (粉玉 Fenyu), and white (天使 AE, Angel AE). These seem to be well adapted to southern climates, and among them, I personally think Fenyu tastes the best.

Once your soil and seedlings are ready, the key to successful strawberry planting is correct handling at the moment of transplant. Start by removing any old, yellow, or diseased leaves so the plant can focus its energy on rooting. When placing the seedling into the soil, follow the essential depth rule: deep enough to cover the base of the crown, but never bury the crown itself; shallow enough not to expose the roots. This prevents both crown rot and dehydration. As you position the seedling, remember the “curved back facing outward” principle—the natural curve of the leaves should point away from the center of the bed or pot, which gives the plant room to expand and makes future runner growth easier to manage. Dig a hole wide enough for the roots, spread them gently downward, set the crown exactly at soil level, and backfill lightly to remove air pockets without compacting the soil. Finish by watering thoroughly, so the seedling settles in and begins establishing a healthy root system.

Daily Management
 

Watering Guidelines: after transplanting, you can water thoroughly to help the roots settle. It's best to transplant in the evening, then water immediately. For the next 3–5 days, check the soil each evening by gently scraping the surface. If it feels slightly dry, apply a small amount of water (avoid waterlogging). Once the seedlings stand upright and look firm, they have passed the adjustment period.
 

Before flowering, follow a "water when the surface is dry" approach: usually every 5–7 days depending on weather, using the "soak when dry, hold when wet" method. During the flowering stage, avoid heavy watering; keep the soil slightly on the dry side, but not too dry; watering roughly every 7–10 days. Excess moisture can interfere with pollen transfer and cause blossoms to rot. During fruit enlargement, water whenever the soil dries out, keeping it consistently moist. This is the period when strawberries need the most water. One day before harvest, reduce watering to improve the sweetness and flavor of the fruit; water again after picking. From the end of harvesting to the start of autumn growth, give one deep watering, then return to regular "dry-then-water" maintenance.

To determine whether watering is needed, use the finger test: insert your index finger up to the second knuckle (2–3 cm). If the soil feels dry, water; if it feels moist, wait. The core principles of strawberry irrigation are "water when dry," "small amounts but frequent," and "avoid wetting leaves" (try to water the soil directly, as wet foliage increases the risk of gray mold). Water at midday in winter and early spring, and in the morning or evening during spring, summer, and fall.

A tip to help you determine whether you need to water the plant based on soil is to look at the color of the soil. If it appears whitish like the one on the left, the soil is fairly dry and needs watering; if it looks darker like the one on the right, it does not. If you still cannot tell, you can also pick up a handful of soil: if it holds together when squeezed, it is still moist; if it crumbles apart immediately, it is dry and needs water.

Fertilization Guidelines: apply a base fertilizer before planting. During vegetative growth, use a balanced N–P–K fertilizer. Before flowering, apply potassium dihydrogen phosphate to promote flower bud formation. Once flowering and pollination begin, switch to high-potassium fertilizers to support fruit enlargement. Supply micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, boron, and zinc, starting before flowering. Amino-acid foliar fertilizers can be used throughout the entire growth cycle every 15–20 days. Seaweed extract, humic acid, or fish protein (choose one) can also be applied through the whole cycle at 15–20 day intervals to support healthy root development.

To be honest, strawberry isn't the only fruit that we try to plant on our own, but it must be one of the most successful attempts. We actually wanted to turn our rooftop into a paradise for every tasty fruit we craved. We gave papayas, dragon fruit, peaches, and more a shot. Some failed, and others, like a hopelessly unproductive peach tree (I will write more about it some days), were eventually evicted by Grandpa, a man who believes low yield is a deal-breaker. What can you do but laugh (and cry a little inside)?

Weeding: just like any other crop, strawberries also require weeding. Otherwise, weeds will steal nutrients from your crops, affecting their growth and fruit production. Weeding here is no different from weeding other crops; just pull out any non-strawberry plants growing next to your strawberry plants.
 

Sun Protection: as we are planting strawberries in the South, where sunshine can be really toxic in the summer, we need to do something to help our strawberries survive through the long and heating summer. The simplest solution is to hang shade netting over the plants during the hottest months, which cuts the worst of the direct sun without blocking light entirely. Mulching the soil surface also helps keep the root zone cooler, and on a rooftop it is worth raising the pots slightly off the ground, since the surface itself can get hot enough to cook the roots from below.

Bird Protection: if you plant your strawberries on your balcony, you won't need to worry about birds. However, if you plan to plant your strawberries in an outdoor garden like us, then you might need to defend your strawberries against birds. After trying a lot of methods, we finally found this kind of small white strawberry protection net bag really helpful. It allows sunlight to pass through while not only preventing birds but also some insects.

Common Diseases and Prevention
Almost every strawberry problem shows up first in the leaves. The chart above collects the most common ones, and broadly they fall into four groups.

Environmental and cultural damage: frost damage, fertilizer burn, salt damage, leaf curl, and leaf wilting. None of these are caused by an organism; they are the plant reacting to cold, to too much fertilizer, to salt built up in the substrate, or to the roots being too wet or too dry. The good news is that they are the easiest to fix, because the cause is something you control. Keep winter temperatures above 10°C with a mini greenhouse or by insulating the pots, fertilize lightly rather than generously, and flush the soil thoroughly with clean water whenever you suspect fertilizer or salt has accumulated.

Fungal and bacterial diseases: angular leaf spot, anthracnose, and powdery mildew. These spread, and they spread fastest in warm, humid, still air. Prevention matters far more than treatment here: water the soil rather than the leaves, avoid keeping

the substrate constantly wet, leave enough space between plants for air to move, and clear fallen leaves off the soil surface instead of letting them sit. Once a plant is infected, remove and destroy the affected leaves or fruit immediately, isolate it from its neighbors, and treat with a fungicide registered for edible crops, usually every 7–10 days until it stops progressing.

Pests: spider mites, thrips, and aphids. All three feed on the undersides of leaves, so that is where you should be looking during your routine checks; by the time damage is obvious on the upper surface, the population is already established. Rinsing both leaf surfaces with clean water removes a surprising amount of webbing and insects, and for a small home planting, picking them off by hand is honestly the simplest method there is. If you do need to spray, evening applications work noticeably better than midday ones.

Nutrient deficiency: iron deficiency is the typical one, recognizable because the leaf yellows while the veins stay green. Supplementing with iron sulfate once or twice a month corrects it.

The single most useful habit is simply looking. Turn a few leaves over every time you water. Nearly every problem in this chart is trivial to deal with in its first week and genuinely difficult a month later.

Runner Management

Strawberries produce runners in both spring and fall. If you'd like to propagate new strawberry plants from your existing ones, you can keep these runners. Once a runner has developed a young plantlet that has rooted firmly in the soil—meaning it cannot be easily lifted—you can cut the runner connecting it to the parent plant. This is similar to cutting an umbilical cord. Allow the young plant to grow stronger on its own, and once it is well-established, you can transplant it to your desired location.
