“Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,
will stay awake, read, write long letters,
and wander restlessly up and down
the tree-lined streets, as the leaves drift down.”
—Rainer Maria Rilke, Herbsttag
If I were to describe my feeling toward the garden, I would borrow Rilke's line above: peaceful, tranquil, and satisfied. There is only one difference. Rilke wanted to teach his readers how to embrace solitude, while I have never felt lonely in the garden, only tranquil. For one thing, I am surrounded by living things in flourish. For another, I share this corner of green with others. So when the last light of sunset falls on me, it brings with it a sense of freshness. It is where everything begins, and where I draw endless strength, the kind that carries me further.
