& Guangdong Oyster Industry
Inspiration
This project grew out of my daily experience of seeing a large number of oyster rafts when I pass Shenzhen Bay Bridge, which connects Shenzhen and Hong Kong. As I became more interested in marine science and learned ecological modeling at Carleton, I felt motivated to dive deeper into the interaction between oyster, people, and environment through a combined scope of mathematical modeling and policy
Goals
As I continued my this projects, I kept three goals in mind. First, I hope to better understand marine science in the specific context of Shenzhen, a city where the line between land and sea has been redrawn again and again by reclamation and rapid growth. Second, I want to trace the historical and political forces behind the changing fortunes of the oyster industry in Guangdong, seeing the oyster as a indication of shifting way of life of the coastal communities. And finally, I want to propose a policy for improving Guangdong's oyster industry that holds both ecological health and human welfare.
Methods
To achieve these goals, I used a combined method. To begin with, I conducted literature review, to examine current gaps of investigation. Then I conducted field investigation with questions I raised during literature review, and discovered new gap between theoretical study and real world situation. After that, I collected data and develop a mathematical model to simulate the carbon exchange in the industry, and wrote a policy proposal. Finally, I turned the gap that cannot be addressed in a short time into art work as a way of raising awareness.
