Beach Cleanup
& Biodegradable Cigarette Advocacy
Inspiration
This project grew out of an experience my friend and I had volunteering at the bay. We were taking part in a beach cleanup, and the single most common item among the litter we picked up was cigarette butts. That led us to bring together high schools across Shenzhen to launch this beach cleanup and a campaign for smoke-free beaches, in the hope that reducing the harm cigarette butts do to our beaches would help preserve the appearance of the city and protect the ocean.
Team
Our team is made up primarily of students, bringing together more than 25 people from seven high schools and universities across Shenzhen. We also received support from the Shenzhen Blue Ocean Conservation Association and several senior volunteers in the city. With the help of all these hands, we saw the event through to completion.
Actions
To promote our campaign, we put in a great deal of effort. Our on-site environmental survey group carried out three field surveys in total, collecting more than 4,000 cigarette butts. We also recorded the proportion of butts by brand as data. Our public opinion group ran a questionnaire survey, and our policy research group gathered and analyzed more than 50 policies from various regions. Finally, we collected public signatures, with more than XX individuals and organizations signing on together in support of our work.
